Widespread rainfall

NAGAPATTINAM: The entire Cauvery delta region experienced widespread rains since Tuesday night and continued till Wednesday evening.
An average of 20 mm rainfall was recorded in Nagapattinam district.
A senior official of the Agriculture Department told The Hindu that the rain was unusual but it is timely and very good for the standing pulses crop of blackgram and greengram raised in about 48,000 hectares in the district.
He pointed out that the farmers could take up ploughing taking advantage of the rain.
Thanjavur
Slight drizzle continued for most part of the day in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts on Wednesday. The rain was unseasonal but had a cooling effect when summer is fast approaching.
It is good for summer ploughing for cultivating alternate crops in the delta, agriculture department officials said.
Farmers raise gingerly, maize, vegetables, sunflower, groundnut, cucumber, water melons as alternate crops in the delta during summer.
