‘Diabesity’ poses a challenge
Special Correspondent
COIMBATORE: ‘Diabesity’, a combination of diabetes and obesity, is posing a tough challenge to both doctors and patients. Even though success is achieved in reducing blood sugar level, weight reduction remains a big challenge, Consultant Diabetologist at the Coimbatore Diabetes Foundation V. Sekar told presspersons here on Monday.
“Instead of being described vegetarians or non-vegetarians, Indians, especially in the south, can be branded as ‘ricearians’ because of the consumption of rice two to three times a day,” he said.
The foundation conducted a survey on a group of people with such a pattern of rice intake at Sulur here. Dr. Sekar said their blood sugar level was found to be high. This, however, could not be extrapolated on the rest of the people consuming rice. This was only a pilot study. But, a detailed study on larger sections might help in establishing similar consumption pattern as the cause of high blood sugar level.
Diet
“We put these people on diet for three weeks, reducing their rice intake. The blood sugar level came down by 60 per cent,” the doctor claimed. “Eat idlis or dosas if rice intake is necessary. Though these are mostly rice-based dishes, these contain 30 per cent dal. Rice intake is reduced to that extent.”
Dr. Sekar said health drinks with labels such as “no added sugar” actually have high glucose. Therefore, it was wrong to conclude that diabetes could consume these because of the claim that there was no sugar.
“We are studying the economics of diabetes; of how exercise and diet can bring down the expenses on drugs,” the doctor said. New drugs were tried out, including one in injection form that can cut down appetite, help in regenerating beta cells and restore normal insulin secretion.
