Teachers clueless about choice-based system
MADURAI: Even as the State Government announced that choice-based credit system (CBCS) would be mandatory for all universities/ colleges from 2008-09 for undergraduate/postgraduate courses, the academic community is still clueless about its implementation.
The Academic Council of the Madurai Kamaraj University, which met here on Wednesday, urged the Government to take suitable steps for issuing clear guidelines/ modalities for simultaneous introduction of CBCS in a uniform manner across all varsities.
Though there was a unanimous view that the CBCS was good for higher education, members pointed out that there was not enough orientation for lecturers, professors, principals and students on how to implement it at a short notice.
Taking part in the debate, K. Dharmalingam, senior professor, observed that all institutions were not similar in terms of infrastructure and there could be problems of implementation.
“CBCS, no doubt, is a good methodology. But different institutions have different capabilities and hence more clarity is needed,” he said.
V. Alagappan, Syndicate member, who chaired the council meeting in the absence of Vice-Chancellor, announced the constitution of a committee to go about with the CBCS implementation.
