State to institute award for women


It will be on the lines of the Stree Shakti Puraskar

Works of SHG women praised by the CM


HYDERABAD: The State government has decided to constitute Mahila Shakti Puraskar to a woman, who reaches the top through selfless service and dedicated work from the grassroots and becomes role model for others.

This award will be on the lines of the Stree Shakti Puraskar presented at the national-level by the Union Ministry for Women and Child Development. The Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced the institution of the award while congratulating Stree Shakti award winners who called on him at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Shaik Shamshad Begum of Khammam district and Vanguri Suvartha of Krishna district won the Kannagi Stree Shakti and Jhansi Lakshmi Stree Shakti awards respectively for their dedicated and selfless work in the field of women development and empowerment in the face of extreme difficulties and challenges.

Dr. Reddy also announced Rs. 3 lakh each to the Krishna and Khammam district federations for producing efficient women role models.

He hailed the work of these women, who showed empowerment of women through the self-help groups.

Referring to the 3 per cent rate of interest for bank loans to the SHGs, Dr. Reddy the pioneering effort was now being replicated by other States and countries also.

The Rural Development Minister G. Chinna Reddy, Principal Secretary (Rural Development) K. Raju and CEO of the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty T. Vijay Kumar were present.
