Letters to the Editor
It is time to adopt a strategy to save all other sports from the onslaught of cricket. De-link cricket from the sports category and shunt it to the ‘entertainment’ domain, where money and mania rule.
J. Muzzafar Ali,
The blame for the hockey disaster should go to all those who wittingly or unwittingly patronise cricket over other sports — the government, the media, sponsors, politicians and the intelligentsia who join the chorus. The hockey debacle should serve as a wake-up call.
Y.S. Kadakshamani,
The overdose of cricket and the disproportionate popularity it enjoys are bound to have an impact on other sports. If India has to be a successful sporting nation which counts in the global arena, it must divert its attention from cricket.
A. Mohan,
Why are we comparing hockey with cricket and blaming it for the dismal performance of our hockey players? It is the responsibility of the hockey players to work hard and uphold the dignity of the national game. Yes, the government should encourage all sporting activities equally but it is for the players to have the spark.
V. Vijigeesha,
It is not as if we are passionate about cricket either. How many of us know the names of the captains and wicketkeepers of our State/zone teams? The truth is we do not care much for any sport. We are just star-struck — whether it is film stars, cricket players or performers in “reality” shows.
M.C. Narayanan,
