Decline in cross-border infiltration: Shivraj Patil
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday said infiltration on India’s international borders has declined. The Centre was taking all steps to check infiltration on boundaries with Pakistan and Bangladesh by strengthening surveillance and increasing forces.
Replying to supplementaries in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Patil said recently no significant intrusion of foreigners on the other borders has been reported.
He informed the House that 128 foreign intruders were apprehended in 2007 on the Indo-Pakistan border, the same number as in the previous year, while 202 intruders were arrested in 2005.
4,206 caught
On the Indo-Bangladesh border, 4,206 persons were caught as against 5,130 in 2006 and 6,384 in 2005.
“While illegal immigration into the country has various socio-economic implications, the danger from foreign infiltration relates mainly to their likely indulgence in subversive or terrorist activities,” he said.
