Tigers posts a fighting total

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Kolkata Tigers posted a fighting 146 for five against Mumbai Champs in the fourth match of the Indian Cricket League’s Edelweiss 20s Challenge here on Wednesday.

Though the innings lacked big partnerships, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and later Rohan Gavaskar took turns to set Tigers on course.

Explosive start

After Tigers elected to bat, opener Subhomoy Das smashed four boundaries, including two in the first over, in his 22-ball 21. The cheap dismissals of dangermen Lance Klusener (9) and skipper Craig McMillan (9) did not hurt Tigers much as Jhunjhunwala kept up the run-rate.

Jhunjhunwala, after hitting four boundaries in his 29-ball 33, became the second victim of former Maharashtra medium pacer Ranjit Kirid. Jhunjhunwala tried to give Kirid the charge and was stumped.

Thereafter, Rohan steadied the boat for the Kolkata team with some sensible batting. The left-hander hit three boundaries in his unbeaten knock of 41.

Though Rohan lost the company of Deep Dasgupta (4), New Zealander Andre Adams made sure runs came thick and fast in the end overs.

Final flourish

In the last three overs, Tigers managed 33 runs, including 16 runs off the final over bowled by Tino Best. Adams smashed two successive off-side sixes off Best and scored a 12-ball 21 to take the total close to the 150-mark. Among the bowlers, Kirid proved the best with two for 17 while Best was the most expensive, conceding 43 runs for his lone reward.

Difficult task

Champs, considered the weakest side in the eight-team field now faces a difficult task to prevent its second straight defeat. In its campaign opener, Champs had lost to Delhi Giants. Tigers, semifinalist in the last edition, is favoured to start its campaign on a winning note.

The scores: Kolkata Tigers 146 for five in 20 overs (Rohan Gavaskar 41 not out, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala 33, Andre Adams 21 not out, Subhomoy Das 21, Ranjit Kharid two for 17) vs. Mumbai Champs.
