Impressive show by Jignas at archery meet

Staff Reporter

His performance brings cheer to district archery fraternity

VIJAYAWADA: The superlative performance of 14-year-old Jignas, a Class IX student of Gowtham School, at the recent Second South Asian Archery Championship at Jamshedpur has brought smiles on the faces of the district archery fraternity.

Coached by international archer Ch. Lenin at Volga Archery Academy, Jignas was a member of the India ‘B’ team in the championship and finished fourth in the overall individual championship by hauling 1,304 points.

“For the first time, Jignas took part in the South Asian Championship, facing some of the best of the seasoned archers. He is a natural talent blessed with loads of concentration. In the days to come, he’ll be a force to reckon with in the national archery,” said Krishna District Archery Association (KDAA) president Ch. Satyanarayana on Wednesday.

This teenager finished third in the 90-metre event by registering 317 points.

In the 50-meter and 30-meter events, he accumulated 329 and 348 points, respectively, finishing fourth and third, respectively. In the 70-metre event, Jignas collected 310 points to take the third place.

Mr. Satyanarayana said the only factor hampering the growth of archery in the city was lack of a proper place for youngsters to practise, as the present football ground at IGMC stadium was not conducive for archery.

“There is a lot of commitment among young archers to make it big. To get the best out of them, we need an exclusive ground to practise without any hindrance,” he pointed out.

District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar and KDAA secretary M. Adinarayana congratulated teenager Jignas for his encouraging show on debut.
