Thingalaya has suggested that Mangalore University take the lead in recording the economic history of the coastal belt. Delivering the keynote address at a seminar on “Development of coastal Karnataka: A historical view” at Mangalagangotri here on Wednesday, Mr. Thingalaya said that the undivided Dakshina Kannada gave birth to five major banks. But the economic growth of the region over the years had not been recorded at the regional level. The university could take up a study with other organisations to record this development, he added. Mr. Thingalaya said that the university could also arrange a seminar to discuss the type of special economic zones (SEZs) suitable for the coastal region. He said that there was need for doubling the Konkan railway track for the economic growth of the region. If a railway station was established at Porkodi on the existing railway line near the site of the new terminal building of Bajpe airport, it would provide good rail connectivity for air passengers. K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said that in the coastal belt agriculture and culture were directly related. If agriculture perished, the cultural practices associated with it would also perish, he said. Usha Suresh, director, Karnataka State Archives Department, inaugurated the seminar which was organised by the Department of Economics. G.V. Joshi, professor of Economics, and Vishwanath, head of the department, spoke. K. Sundar Naik, Registrar, was present.
