MAIN ATTRACTION: The lake at Pulicat, which has a lot of tourist potential. KANCHEEPURAM: Construction of star hotels and any other tourism-related projects, taken up by entrepreneurs in 18 specific places in the State, will qualify for capital subsidy and soft loan facility. Enquiries reveal that the State Government has issued orders to attract entrepreneurs to invest in construction of star hotels or set up tourism-related facilities such as amusement parks, golf course, rope car or boat house at these places, which have been classified as ‘Lesser Known Tourism’ (LKT) places such as Pulicat village and Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. If a single-star hotel is to be set up at an LKT centre, which has naturally rich and tourist potential sites, but is not well-known to tourists, it will qualify for a subsidy of 10 per cent of the project cost (excluding land value), subject to a maximum of Rs.25 lakh. If it is a two-star hotel, then the maximum subsidy would be Rs.50 lakh and for the hotels with three stars and above, the maximum subsidy would be Rs.100 lakh. The hotels must have a minimum of 20 rooms with attached bathrooms and should have adequate space for car parking. For all other projects to be taken up at LKT centres, a maximum subsidy of Rs.100 lakh would be provided. Apart from this, soft loan at the rate of 0.1 per cent per annum would be extended for first five years to help entrepreneurs pay sales tax, who, in turn, have to repay the soft loan to the government in the subsequent five years, sources added. Following are the places that have been classified as LKT centres by the Tourism Department (apart from Pulicat and Periyapalayam): Elagiri in Vellore district; Thirukkadaiyur, Vedaranyam and Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) in Nagapattinam district; Thirumanancheri in Thanjavur district; Sithannavassal in Pudukottai district; Puliancholai in Perambalur district; Tharamangalam and Kolli Hills in Salem district; Hoganekkal in Dharmapuri district; Bhavni Kooduthurai in Erode district; Valparai in Coimbatore district; Megamalai in Theni district; Sirumalai in Dindigul district; Thiruppudaimaruthur in Tirunelveli district and Thiruparappu in Kanyakumar district.
