There are 37 schools, engineering colleges and medical colleges in the prohibited area

Education Department to be directed not to permit any new college, school in catchment area

HYDERABAD: The State Government submitted to the High Court a six-point plan to regulate development which has already taken place in the 10 km. radius of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar lakes, drinking water sources for the twin cities.

In a detailed affidavit filed by the Chief Secretary on Wednesday in a case relating to the structures built in the prohibited areas notified under G.O. 111, the Government said that layouts without any housing would be cancelled by the district Collector.

Public caution notices would be issued cautioning people not to undertake any development in these unauthorised layouts.

Layouts with scattered housing would be cancelled by the Collector and action initiated against the individual constructions.

Heavy penalty

Existing farm houses would be regulated by imposing heavy penalty and subject to certain conditions relating to ground coverage, FSI (1:0.5), provision of sewerage treatment plant, plantation and no obstruction to channels, if any.

The Chief Secretary informed the Court that there were 37 schools, engineering colleges and medical colleges in the prohibited area with a student strength of 44,500.

In the case of engineering colleges, retrofitting mechanism in consultation with the A. P. Pollution Control Board would be insisted.

The Industries Department would initiate action for re-location of industries existing prior to 1996.

Those set up after issuance of G.O. 111 would be closed. Lastly, the Education department would be directed not to permit any new college or school in the catchment area.
