Fishermen seek diesel arrears

VISAKHAPATNAM: Mechanised boat operators have appealed to the State government to immediately release the amount outstanding towards subsidy on diesel purchased by them during the past 16 months.
Though the State has to give subsidy to boat owners at the rate of Rs. 6.03 per litre per month for purchase up to 3,000 litres, no amount is released since November 2006.
Subsidy
The subsidy from the Centre at the rate of Rs.1.50 per litre is also due for past few months.
Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators’ Association general secretary Ch. Satyanarayana Murthy, in a representation to the government, said the subsidy amount due from the State should be released immediately.
‘Industry in mess’
He also said the fishing industry was in financial mess due to depleting catch and a host of problems.
