Club WC prizemoney increased

ZURICH: FIFA increased the prizemoney at this year’s Club World Cup by $500,000 after agreeing to restore a fifth-place match.

The knockout tournament, scheduled from Dec. 11 to 21 in Japan, brings together world soccer’s six continental federation champion and the host nation’s domestic league champion. The winner of a fifth-place match will earn $1.5 million, bringing the total prize money to $16.5 million, FIFA said on Wednesday.

In 2007, the fifth and sixth placed teams — Sepahan of Iran and Mexican club Pachuca — were each given $1 million. — Agencies
