Students prevented from writing exam

Principal-in-charge cites attendance shortage

Students allowed to write exam from today after parents take up the issue with the authorities

KOCHI: Government Higher Secondary School at Namakuzhi near here witnessed some tense moments after the Principal-in-charge refused to allow seven students appear for the Higher Secondary Examination on Wednesday citing attendance shortage.

The issue began after K.A. Joy, Chief Superintendent and Principal-in-charge, asked the students not to write the examination for not having the required attendance. Three students left the campus before a Vigilance squad of the higher secondary examination reached the school to enquire into the incident. The squad directed Mr. Joy to allow the students appear for the examination provisionally.

Explaining that the Chief Superintendent should not have blocked the students from appearing for the examination, K.M. Sivaraman, team leader (of the squad), said that the students would not have received the admit card, if they had failed to secure the required attendance.

He said that there was negligence on the part of the Principal, as he had not informed the Higher Secondary Directorate about the attendance shortage.

In his reply to the Regional Deputy Director of Higher Secondary Education, Mr. Joy clarified that the students failed to appear for the regular classes held after the admit card was issued to them.

Anxious parents approached the Regional Deputy Director Mohammad Kunju with their complaints.

Mr. Kunju said that he had asked the Principal to allow the seven students to appear for the examination to be held on Thursday. Those who could not write the examination held on Wednesday would be allowed to appear for the ‘Save a Year’ examination, he said.
