THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations began on a positive note with a majority of the students and teachers expressing happiness over the nature of questions set for Malayalam, the first test subject.

“Though some students found difficulty in answering certain questions, the general opinion among students was that the examination was quite easy,” said Prasanna Kumari, Principal, Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School, Vazhuthacaud. 835 students took the examinations at the school.

St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Pattom, with 1, 411 candidates, had the maximum number of students appearing for the examinations in the city.

Unlike previous years, the SSLC examinations were held in the afternoon. Special arrangements had also been made for students coming under the category of ‘Integrated Education for the Disabled.’ At Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, 12 such candidates wrote the exam under the guidance of 4 invigilators who read out the question paper.

“Unlike the regular candidates, these students do not have any examination related tensions or worries,” said Padmavathy Amma, a former employee of the Department of Health who accompanied her grand daughter Gatha Y., a student in this category who wrote the exam at Government GHSS, Pattom.

Minister for Education M.A. Baby visited the school and interacted with the students after the examination.

The highlight of this year’s examination is the presence of a State-level monitoring cell at the Pareeksha Bhavan to ensures hassle-free transportation and distribution of question papers to the respective examination centres from national banks and government treasuries by coordinating with officials at the 300-odd clusters located across the State.

According to Biju J., who is in charge of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha at the monitoring cell, the first day of the examination was devoid of any glitches. “We kept in touch with the respective DEO’s (Distirct Educational Officers) at regular intervals to ensure that the proceedings went ahead smoothly. We also received a number of queries from parents and students regarding the timing of the examination,” he said.

There were no candidates for SSLC examination at the Poojappura Central Jail this year. However, five convicts, Raveendran, 35, a native of Wayanad; Prakasan 32, a native of Guruvayur; Falgunan, 26, a native of Chavakkad; Soj, 30, a resident of Vellor; and Satheesh Sebastian, 26, a native of Idukki took the second year higher secondary examination, which also began today. The prisoners were assisted in preparing for the examination by the jail officials, fellow prisoners, and Care Ministry, a voluntary agency that provided them with the necessary educational materials and other examination related assistance.
