DEHRA DUN: Uttarakhand became the first State to have 50 per cent reservation along with reservation of seats for two successive terms for women at all three levels of panchayats with the passage of the Uttarakhand Panchayat Law (Amendment) Bill, 2008, in the Vidhan Sabha here on Wednesday. States like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh have 50 per cent reservation for women in panchayats but not for two successive terms while Tamil Nadu has reservation for two successive terms but no 50 per cent reservation. Chief Minister Bhuwan Chadra Khanduri and Panchayati Raj Minister Bishan Singh Chufal described it as an initiative towards granting the right place to women in all areas of planning and execution of development schemes. Amendment hailedWelcoming the amendment, Kishore Upadhyay of the Congress said that now the State should take the most dynamic step of providing 50 per cent reservation to women in the Legislative Assembly as women are better planners and managers. Terming the amendment as a path-breaking initiative that all other States should emulate, Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra chairperson Avdhesh Kaushal said his organisation would continue to train women in contesting the elections. He called upon women to contest even the unreserved seats.
