BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of villagers from Bhadrak district staged a demonstration in front of State Assembly on Thursday demanding compensation under present Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy-2007. Hundreds of acres of land belonging to farmers and land enjoyed by landless people for years were acquired by government for dredging Salandi and Nalia waterway, which was about 100 km long, said Debendra Puhan, who represented the people, here. He said anti-social elements hired by contractors were attacking people who protested “illegal” acquisition of land. “The 12 metre wide small river is being widened to 60 metres. Crops and several fruit-bearing plants have been damaged for the purpose,” Indumati Mallick of Salandi-Nalia Sanskar Kshyatigrastha Janamanch said. They threatened to intensify their agitation if government did not step in for providing proper compensation to people.
