Stir followed school girl’s death

AMBUR: The Ambur police have got a warrant from court to arrest the protesters who staged a road roko near the Rajiv Gandhi statue on the bypass six months ago to condemn the death of a Standard V student who was run over by a train on the way to her school while crossing the railway track.
Samuel Chellapandian, District Secretary, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), told The Hindu that despite an earlier assurance from the police that they would drop the FIR filed against 132 protestors, including six councillors and six teachers (four women, two men), the police had obtained an arrest warrant.
On Thursday, the police arrested six of the protestors.
Mr. Chellapandian said that for several years, students from Natarajapuram have been using a six feet approach road to reach Bethlehem to go to school. Some of the main educational institutions were in the Bethlehem area. The same approach road was used by office-goers and other residents to reach Ambur.
The Police Department, after the construction of a police residential quarters, had put a fence blocking the approach road as the officials residing there did not want any sort of interference from the outsiders.
Mr. Chellapandian said that after the incident, the students took a detour to reach Bethlehem. It was under these circumstances that the school girl was run over by a train while trying to cross the track.
