Their demands include hike in commission from the government CUTTACK: The indefinite strike by stamp vendors in the Sate has severely affected the court work in Cuttack city, including that of the High Court. Filing of writ applications, submission of affidavits, execution of sale deeds and financial transactions of all courts are crippled due to the strike launched by stamp vendors demanding hike in their commission and increase in the sale limit of non-judicial stamp papers. No solution in sightSome 6,000 stamp vendors in the State have been agitating in response to a call given by the All Orissa Stamp Vendors’ Federation. Even as their strike entered the 12th day on Wednesday, there is no sign of any solution in sight. The government has not yet taken any step to redress the vendors’ grievances. The government is equally suffering, as the vendors on an average purchase stamp papers worth over Rs. 1crore in a day. The vendors of the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar make 40 per cent of these purchases, according to sources. As the vendors are on strike, both lawyers and their clients are facing untold miseries. “We are certainly facing problems and I suppose the work in the High Court is hampered by the strike,” said Bibhu Prasad Tripathy, an advocate. “We have to attach requisite amount of stamp papers while filing writ petitions as well as during submission of affidavits and counter affidavits. But due to stamp vendors’ strike we are facing difficulties in procuring stamp papers from the treasuries,” he said. The stamp vendors have been demanding a higher commission from the government and they want a hike in their limit of selling the stamp papers. A vendor is now allowed to purchase only stamp papers worth Rs. 50,000 a month. They want to increase the limit to Rs. 2 lakhs.
