Fisheries College students threaten to step up agitation

Correspondent

Separate cadre for fisheries officers demanded

Filling of posts through direct recruitment sought

CUTTACK: Students of the only Fisheries College in the State at Rangeilunda in Berhampur, who have been on strike for the last month, have threatened to step up their agitation if their demands are not met immediately.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, the agitating students warned that they would take the law into hands and commit self-immolation in front of the Chief Minister’s residence in Bhubaneswar.

The students are now upbeat, as the Orissa Fisheries Extension Officers’ Association has thrown their weight behind the cause of the students.

The students are demanding a separate cadre for fisheries officers by amalgamating the posts of fishery extension officer (FEO) and junior fishery officer (JFO) at block level.

They also demand that all these posts should be filled by a direct recruitment from among successful students passed out from the College of Fisheries.

“When the junior agriculture officer posts are filled from among the students of College of Agriculture why can’t the same be done in fisheries department also, the students asked.

Moreover, the students also demand that by amalgamating the posts of FEOs and JFOs in a common cadre, the vacant posts should be immediately filled.

“We support the move taken by the students as their demands are genuine”, says the officers’ association president Saroj Kumar Mohapatra.

He said the FEOs in the State are a disgruntled lot as they are working in the same post for last 25 years. This has happened because the FEOs have no definite level of posting and are attached to different offices, he added.
