Hubli-Dharwad
Demand: Employees of Dharwad Akashvani and Doordarshan Kendra staging a dharna in Dharwad on Thursday. DHARWAD: Employees of the Dharwad Akashvani Kendra and Doordarshan Kendra staged a token sit-in dharna in front of All India Radio here on Thursday. The dharna was staged in response to a call given by the National Federation of the All India Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees for a nationwide protest on Thursday. CommitteeThe protesters said that although the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting had agreed to consider the federation’s demands at a meeting held on September 27, 2007, and constituted a committee led by the Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, to recommend amendments to the Prasar Bharati Act, nothing had been done so far. The committee, which was scheduled to submit its recommendations by November 30, 2007, had not met even once. The draft proposal submitted by the federation suggesting amendments to the Prasar Bharati Act were yet to be looked into the committee, they said. RestructuringThe Department of Information and Broadcasting was taking steps to restructure the Prasar Bharati Act and the federation was being kept out of the process, the protesters said. The federation of Akiashvani and Doordarshan employees has decided to observe a three-day relay hunger strike from March 26, and organise “Parliament Chalo” on April 16.
