Airport taxi drivers fear for their livelihood
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Representatives of the Bangalore Airport KSTDC Pre-paid Taxi Drivers’ Union met Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel in New Delhi on Wednesday urging him to protect their jobs, which they are set to lose once the commercial operations from the international airport at Devanahalli commences.
Dharna
Union General Secretary Neelkantappa told The Hindu that they also sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar pressing for their demands, and several Kannadigas residing in Delhi came in support of their demands.
“The Minister and officials have heard our grievances patiently and have promised to protect our jobs,” he said.
The delegation comprising over 20 representatives of the union also met several Members of Parliament and Ministers from Karnataka including Oscar Fernandes and M.V. Rajasekharan.
Job loss
The KSTDC, which is presently running the pre-paid taxi counter in HAL Airport, lost out on a similar contract with the Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) to offer pre-paid taxi services, which would result in loss of over 700 jobs.
