Counselling centre at Coimbatore prison

Coimbatore: The prison administration has inaugurated a counselling centre for women prisoners and an examination centre for those aspiring to get basic education at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
DIG of Prisons P. Munivelu, in a release, said that the prison, accommodating close to 2,400 prisoners, had been accorded the status of an examination centre by the Directorate of Examinations of the government.
This would enable more than 100 prisoners to take their 8th, 10th and 12th standard examinations while serving life sentences.
In addition to the two teachers from the Valar Kalvi scheme deputed by Collector Neeraj Mittal, efforts were on to rope in the services of non-governmental organisations and also 15 graduate prisoners to equip the prisoners to take the exams with confidence.
Similarly, for the benefit of 60 women prisoners, the Prison Department had inaugurated a family welfare counselling centre.
Principal of the Nirmala College for Women, Paulin Mary inaugurated it.
Additional Superintendent of Prisons, Arivudainambe and Deputy Superintendents of Prisons, Shamugasundaram and Pradeep would be in charge of the centre.
