HYDERABAD: As a precursor to developing a full-fledged renal transplantation facility, a new Nephrology ward with 25 beds, was inaugurated at Gandhi hospital on Thursday, coinciding with World Kidney Day.

The new facility, apart from providing in-patient facilities to patients with various kidney ailments, would also extend dialysis facilities.

Earlier, patients with kidney problems were usually accommodated at wards, meant for other specialities like general medicine.

This is the first time that an exclusive ward has been developed only for Nephrology patients at Gandhi hospital. The new facility would go a long way in reducing the risks of infection among patients, prone to infections while recuperating at other speciality wards.

Hospital authorities have informed that plans have been set in motion to start a renal transplant facility at Gandhi hospital very soon. Development of operation theatres, taking up civil works and applying for certification to take up renal transplantation from various organisations like Indian Society of Nephrology are underway.

To this effect, a team of Nephrologists and renal transplant experts from Osmania General Hospital had recently visited the Nephrology department at Gandhi hospital and conducted viability studies.

“For anything to start, first a committed ward was needed. The new ward would have a dedicated team of Nephrologists. Already we are developing the operation theatres and soon would start civil works required to develop a renal transplantation centre,” informed Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital Dr. B. Balraju.
