This Day That Age
The need for setting up Parliamentary Committees to go into the working of Central Government Departments and suggest measures for effecting economy in their expenditure was stressed by several members who spoke at the meeting of the Parliamentary Congress Party held in New Delhi on March 12. The meeting had been convened to discuss the general budget and formulate the party’s attitude in regard to various taxation proposals. It was pointed out that a lot of Government money was going waste and the expenditure incurred by the various Ministers was not commensurate with the work going on. For instance, they said that while large funds had been earmarked for the minor irrigation schemes, the schemes had actually made no progress and its benefits were not reaching the agriculturists. Despite the Food Ministers’ claim that minor irrigation facilities were being extended to the farmers, these facilities were still non-existent in most of the villages.
