Corrections and clarifications

The eleventh paragraph in an article “Agenda for re-colonisation?” (Op-Ed, March 12, 2008) should have been “There was a time when the insurgency leadership scoffed at this democratic process; this is not the case now”, and not “There was a time when the insurgency leadership scoffed at this democratic process; this not the case now”, as was published.

The twelfth paragraph should have been “A similar disconnect exists between the public pronouncements of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), whose objective too is the attainment of a sovereign, independent Asom, and the reality”, and not “A similar disconnect exists between the public pronouncements of and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) ….”, as was published.

In an article “‘Consider Kosovo fait accompli’” (Op-Ed, March 12, 2008), a sentence in the answer to the first question should have been “… You can tell in each individual room, we can tell if some of them are from the north and some of them from the south, some have this native language, some have that native language, and this religion and that religion”, and not “You can tell in each individual room, we can tell if some of them are from the north and some of them from the north ….”, as was published.

In a sentence in the answer to the second question (“We had no choice given the atrocities the Belgrade government was carrying out against the Kosovos to conduct the military operations that opened the road to the independence for Kosovo”), the reference to Kosovos led to a query. The people of Kosovo are called Kosovians or Kosovos. Mr. Talbott preferred to use the word “Kosovos”.

(The article was an interview with Mr. Strobe Talbott, a foreign affairs specialist with a 34-year engagement with India.)

In a report “Farmers plan demonstration on March 14” (Tamil Nadu, March 10, 2008) a sentence in the second paragraph was “As per the budget announcement, middle level and big farmers having a land holding of over five acres could opt for one time settlement by paying 25 per cent of the outstanding to get the rest 75 per cent waived”, while an article “Oh! What a lovely waiver” (Op-Ed, March 10, 2008), in the fourth paragraph said “For those with over two hectares, there is the old deal of ‘one-time settlement’ of their bank loans. In this case, if they repay 75 per cent of the loan, they will be given a rebate of 25 per cent.” The Op-Ed article is right.
