58 LTTE cadres killed: Colombo

COLOMBO: At least 58 cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been killed in continuing fighting in Sri Lanka’s north in the last 48 hours, the military has said.

In a statement, it claimed that 28 Tigers were killed and 49 others were injured in clashes at Vavuniya, Welioya, and Mannar on Thursday.

Nine LTTE cadres were killed and a similar number injured during a confrontation at Udayanthankulama area in Vavuniya. A large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered. Three soldiers were injured.

In the general area Karampachchikulam, troops attacked a LTTE tractor, killing six Tigers while three more Tiger cadres were killed in a separate incident at Karampachchikulam.

Army troops also attacked and destroyed a LTTE bunker killing two Tiger cadres. On the Welioya front, troops killed four LTTE cadres and injured 40 others.
