Industries Centre surpasses PMRY target

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The District Industries Centre (DIC) has surpassed the target for credit-linkage of beneficiaries under the Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) this fiscal.

Against a target of 1,150, the DIC has provided training and ensured bank loans for 1,250 beneficiaries with the backing of Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries’ Association (TIDITSSIA) and other agencies.

TIDITSSIA has trained 369 PMRY beneficiaries so far and will train 63 more youths in the next batch, said S. Sridharan, association president, who sees much significance in the higher number of women beneficiaries (193) among the trained youths. The MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) policy unveiled recently by the State government is essentially an initiative to promote entrepreneurs in the micro-industry sector that generates large-scale employment.

The subsidy component and other concessions will motivate youths to start micro-enterprises.

According to DIC General Manager B. Baskaran, training for self-employment oriented youths will receive further thrust after the impending merger of PMRY with the National Rural Employment Guarantee Project. Future beneficiaries will have the advantage of undergoing a minimum of one-month training on skills enhancement and on aspects starting from fulfilment of formalities with government departments and marketing.

The minimum qualification for becoming a PMRY beneficiary being a pass in standard VIII, there has been encouraging patronage in the district.

A major factor for the success of the DIC and training agencies in attracting youths towards PMRY is the interest evinced by banks to extend credit linkage, said Mr. Sridharan.
