Court directive to evict encroachers

Perandoor canal: Corporation gets more time

Corporation told to complete work within one year

Rehabilitation of 91 families yet to be completed

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday granted the Kochi Corporation one-year time to evict encroachers on the banks of the Perandoor Canal.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice K.T. Sankaran, while closing a contempt petition filed by the Institute of Social Welfare, said the Corporation secretary should not seek more time to comply with the directive of the High Court.

The petitioner was given the liberty to approach the court, if need arose in future. The petitioner sought to initiate contempt proceedings against the Corporation secretary for not implementing the directive for eviction.

Corporation secretary Mini Antony appeared in person before the Bench on Thursday when the petition came up for hearing. The court had directed her to appear in person, as it was dissatisfied with an affidavit filed by her earlier. Counsel for the secretary submitted that she would comply with the directives in a year.

In her fresh affidavit, the secretary pointed out that the Corporation had made every effort to ascertain and locate the encroachers. Most of the encroachers had been evicted. The institutions of the Central and State governments were asked to remove the obstructions to the free flow of water in the canal. The Public Works Department (PWD) had been requested to reconstruct the bridge near Kaloor over the canal, which caused hurdles to the free flow of water. The affidavit said the rehabilitation of 91 families evicted along the stretch of Sahodaran Ayyappan Road to Udayanar colony was yet to be completed. They would be rehabilitated in Mundanveli. It was expected to be completed in a year.
