Striking airport workers, CISF come to blows

Strike supporters dumped garbage at airport entrance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A tense situation prevailed in front of the international airport here on Thursday evening after striking Airport Authority of India (AAI) workers clashed with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel responsible for the safety of the key establishment. The police said six persons were injured in the clashes that began after 5 p.m.

The police identified the injured CISF personnel as S.K. Dube, S. Subbayya and V.N. Naidu. The injured employees of AAI are Subramany and Jayakumar. Both are members of the striking Airport Authority Employees Forum. They have got themselves admitted to different hospitals in the city.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Shanghumugham) P. Reghunath said the strike supporters “created mischief” at the airport by dumping used paper cups, waste paper and garbage at the entrance of the international and domestic terminals. Some of them broke the flower pots at the office of the director, Airport Authority of India. Mr. Reghunath said a section of the employees has accused the CISF of manhandling their colleagues. The city police have been deployed in strength in front of the airport to prevent escalation of violence.

Mr. Reghunath said the police were awaiting the opinion of the AAI director to decide on whether to press charges against the employees. Another official said the destruction of flower pots technically constituted a violation of the provisions of the Prevention of Public Property Destruction Act. He said the police were yet to receive any written complaint from the CISF, AAI workers or their supervisors.
