THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The electronics industry is to play a vital role in supporting the IT industry in the State. Once this is done, Kerala will be a destination with total solutions for the IT industry, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said.

He was delivering the presidential address at the inaugural ceremony of the National e-Governance Project Advocacy Seminar and the Kerala IT.Com 2008 fair at the Technopark here on Thursday. The government has put in place a policy to encourage the electronics industry. There was a time when Keltron was the industry leader in electronics. The firm got sidelined due to a variety of reasons, he said. Today it is back on its feet again.

Reaping benefits

The success story of entrepreneurs in the Technopark has created more opportunities for business in the State. So, the Technopark could expand its operations, he said. “It is a fact that IT industry has given a push to the socio-economic growth in the State. It has also projected Kerala as an ideal investment location. This is helping the industrial scenario in the State,” Mr. Karim said.

In his inaugural address, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said Kerala was expected to become the first e-literate State in India by the end of 2008. Within a few years Kerala will be one of the leading States in India in the IT and ITES sectors.

Hub and spokes

“We are developing parks in all districts of Kerala in a hub and spokes model, with hubs in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode,” he said.

Later Mr. Achuthanandan inaugurated the Kerala IT.Com 2008 fair at the Technopark grounds.
