Move on Welfare Boards opposed
|
TAMBARAM: Members of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged a demonstration in Tambaram on Wednesday, protesting the government move to shift the Welfare Boards for unorganised workers functioning under the Labour Welfare Department to the Revenue Department from April.
J.Boopalan, president of the Kancheepuram district unit of Unorganised Workers Association, said the proposal would create disastrous consequences for the welfare of 1.5 crore members of the 14 Welfare Boards constituted for construction workers, farmers, manual labourers, autorickshaw drivers, painters and others engaged in the unorganised sector.
At present too, it was not an easy task for members of these Welfare Boards to get the eligible assistance easily.
Transferring these Boards to the already overburdened Revenue Department would only make matters worse, Mr. Boopalan said. Urging the State Government to drop the move, the speakers said the proposal would only dilute the concept of workers’ welfare.
P. Angusamy, Kancheepuram district AITUC secretary, also spoke.
