Notice ordered to CBI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A Special Court for CBI cases here has ordered notice to the CBI on a petition by a former Transport Minister, K.A. Sengottaiyan, seeking to cancel the cognisance taken by the court of the offence against him in the ‘gifts case,’ as the sanction order to prosecute him had not been produced.

The case has been posted for March 26.

It relates to former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa allegedly accepting 89 demand drafts for about Rs.2 crore drawn in her favour on the occasion of her birthday in 1992. She was cited as the first accused in the charge sheet filed by the CBI. Mr. Sengottaiyan, cited as the second accused, it was alleged, had committed an offence of abetting her.
