HYDERABAD: Members of the Telugu Desam Party and the CPI(M) walked out of the Assembly on Friday protesting against the poor maintenance of national highways in the State. Leading the walkout by TDP members during question hour, its deputy leader T. Devender Goud blamed the State government for neglecting the upkeep of the roads. Though there were over 30 Lok Sabha members of Congress from the State, they had failed to secure adequate Central funds for maintenance of the national highways. He said the condition of NH-9 (Hyderabad-Vijayawada) was so pathetic that he was scared of having a wink of sleep during a recent night journey on the road from Vijayawada. Huge fundsThe government, however, was least concerned about the condition of the road. In contrast, the Tamil Nadu government had mobilised huge Central funds to improve its roads. All the State highways had been converted into national highways to be eligible for Central assistance in Tamil Nadu, he said. CPI(M) floor leader Nomula Narasimhaiah said the NH-9, which passed through Nakrekal Assembly constituency represented by him, was deliberately neglected.
