Blood donation camp on World Health Day

Special correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of World Health Day celebrations in the city, a blood donation camp will be held at the Central Stadium here on April 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is being organised jointly by Terumo Penpol Limited in association with All Kerala Blood Donors Society, Club 25, the Kerala State Sports Council and State Bank of Travancore.

The blood banks at the Medical College, Regional Cancer Centre and the Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) will collect the blood from voluntary blood donors.

According to the organisers, the primary objective of the exercise is to promote the concept of voluntary blood donation.

Safe blood donors are the cornerstone of a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products.

The safest blood donors are voluntary, non-remunerated donors from low-risk populations. Despite this, family/replacement and paid donors, who are usually associated with a significantly higher prevalence of transfusion and transmissible infections, still provide more than 50 % of the blood collected in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ensuring good care and a pleasant experience during blood donation and effective communication between the blood centre staff and donors are all important factors for the retention of safe blood donors. WHO has developed a set of simple guidelines designed to assist those responsible for blood donor recruitment in resource-poor settings.

These guidelines provide approaches for setting up a communication programme – organising, collecting information, and developing plans. Those interested in participating in the donation camp at the Central Stadium are directed to contact 04713015602 / 9847422400.
