Water crisis to end in Pudupalayam

Nod for Sathanur water scheme

It is estimated to cost over Rs.5 crore

Tender likely to be floated by

March-end

PUDUPALAYAM: The State government has approved the Sathanur Combined Water Supply Scheme to supply drinking water to Pudupalayam in Tiruvannamalai district. It is estimated to cost more than Rs.5 crore.

Town panchayat president Durgadevi Gandhi told The Hindu that she and panchayat union chairman C. Sundarapandian had handed over a representation to Food Minister E.V. Velu about the water crisis. He, in turn, had recommended the Sathanur project. A detailed proposal was worked out and handed over to Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, who approved it.

The total population of Pudupalayam is 15,000. The town panchayat was providing water to meet the requirements of 10,000 people. Water used to be supplied from a sump at Adhivaram. It was pumped to two overhead tanks of 2 lakh litres and 3 lakh litres capacity each. But, now a situation existed where the supply fell short of the demand owing to drought.

Ms. Gandhi said that it was under these circumstances that the Sathanur scheme was recommended. Tender for the implementation of the scheme was likely to be floated by the end of March. Instruction would be given to complete the work by the year end. As per the scheme, water from Sathanur would be routed to Thazhaiutu. From Thazhaiutu, water would be supplied through separate pipeline to Pudupalayam.

Stating that the town panchayat had approached the Water Board for installation of two more overhead tanks of one lakh litre capacity each, Ms. Gandhi said that the existing pipelines in the town were laid in 1983 and should be replaced. A similar proposal for replacing the pipeline had been sanctioned. The total number of household tap connections in Pudupalayam was 1,050. The total number of public taps was 140.
