VCK plans demo near Archbishop’s residence

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi plans to stage a demonstration in front of the residence of Archbishop Anandarayar in Puducherry on March 19, protesting the March 9 violence at Eraiyur near Ulunderpet, in which the houses of Dalit Christians were ransacked and two killed in the police firing.

According to D. Ravikumar, MLA, party general secretary Thol. Thirumavalavan is likely to participate in the demonstration.

The MLA told The Hindu that even though the Vatican had clearly told Bishops and Archbishops from South India that the Dalit Christians’ interests should be protected, the Cuddalore - Puducherry Diocese had not heeded the advice.

He said the Dalit Christians were prohibited from using the common path, even for rituals such as marriage and funeral. Two funeral corteges were in service, one for the majority Christians and another for the Dalit Christians. Unable to bear the ignominy, the Dalit Christians had started celebrating the church festival on May 24, while the majority Christians observed the festivities on May 30.

The MLA said that at the peace committee meeting, it was said that the same parish priest would conduct the masses or services once in a week, preferably on Sunday, at the Sahaya Matha Church built by the Dalit Christians. But this was not acceptable to the Dalit Christians who felt that only a full-time parish priest would provide them with regular church services, Mr. Ravikumar added.

Eraiyur still tense

Meanwhile, police sources said Eraiyur continued to be tense and hence, Mr. Thol. Thirumavalan had been requested to put off his March 16 visit to the village.

,A strong posse of police force was posted there ever since the outbreak of violence on March 9, sources added.
