Move to tap and encourage sports talent in Tiruvannamalai

Free coaching for 20 physical training teachers below 45 years of age

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Tiruvannamalai district administration has embarked on various programmes to identify young sportspersons and provide them the required training and facilities. The district administration will offer free coaching to the sportspersons of the district for a week at Nehru Stadium, Chennai, from March 24 to 30.

District Collector Satyabrata Sahoo said that the administration planned to give free sports coaching in boxing, gymnastics, judo, swimming and hand ball to 20 physical training teachers who were below 45 years of age. It would be offered through the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, which would also arrange for free transportation, food and accommodation.

Before March 17

Mr. Sahoo said that the Physical Training teachers interested could send their application to the District Sports Office on or before March 17. Further, the Indian Sports Committee in Bangalore offered six weeks certificate course training in various field of sports for the teachers. The training was offered at Bangalore, Aurangabad, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai. The application form to participate in the certificate course training was available at the Tiruvannamalai Sports Office. People interested should to fill the application form and send it to the Indian Sports Committee, Bangalore, on or before March 31. The application form could be obtained from the District Sports Office on all the working days.

Mr. Sahoo said that even the sportspersons in the district could avail themselves of the opportunities to get trained in their field of interest in foreign countries.

The prescribed application form could also be obtained from the District Sports Office on all working days. Information could also be directly sought from the District Sports Officer either through phone (04175-233169) or in person.

The Collector said that the State government was taking all steps to encourage and develop sportspersons across the State. Socially backward students of both the sexes with talent for sports were identified and given proper training. The Tiruvannamalai district administration had spent Rs. 98 lakh on an exclusive women sports hostel. Over 75 sportswomen, who had been certified for their skills in various fields of sports, would be trained.

Sports meet

Meanwhile, a district-level sports competition was organised by the District Administration for the students. The sports competition was organised by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and the All India Sports Authority.

The valedictory event for the competition was held on Friday. Mr. Sahoo presided over the valedictory function and gave away prizes to the winners.
