BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday requested the Bar associations in different regions of the State to cooperate with the one-man Commission that was set up to look into the demands for establishment of permanent benches of the High Court in their areas. Replying to an adjournment motion on the issue of the ongoing lawyers’ agitation in different parts of the State, Mr. Patnaik appealed to the Bar Associations to put forth their cases before the Commission for an early report. The members of as many as 12 Bar associations have been demanding setting up of permanent benches of the High Court in their respective areas. The Bar Associations that had submitted representations for establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court in their areas include Sundargarh Bar Association, Rajgangpur Bar Association, Lahunipada Bar Association, Kalahandi Bar Association, Dharmagarh Bar Association, M. Rampur Bar Association, Bargarh Bar Association, Balasore Bar Association, Bolangir Bar Association, Sambalpur Bar Association and Berhampur Bar Association, Mr. Patnaik said. The Chief Minister said that the Commission to be headed by retired High Court Judge C.R. Pal would make an in-depth study of the existing constitutional provisions for establishment of a Permanent Bench or Circuit Bench of the High Court anywhere in the State other than the principal seat. The State government has taken a decision to set up the Commission after the High Court rejected the State government’s request to consider establishment of permanent benches of the High Court at Sambalpur and Berhampur.
