Correspondent

Symposium on ‘Plant resources of India’ begins

CHIKMAGALUR: S. Natesh, senior adviser, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, has urged government, non-governmental organisations and other agencies to come together and work towards increasing the forest cover.

Inaugurating a two-day symposium on “Plant resources of India” at the JCBM College in Sringeri on Friday, Dr. Natesh said even the Aryans were aware of the importance of conserving resources and associated many flowers and plants with gods.

Darshan Shankar, adviser, Planning Commission, spoke on the challenges that faced trans-disciplinary research relating to medicinal plants.

B.S. Sherigar, Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, said biotechnology and biodiversity should be complementary and not contradictory.

J.H. Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, said the increasing human pressure was leading to faster extinction of various species. K.V.R. Tagore, Commissioner, Department of Information, wanted a law to be introduced to punish those who destroyed medicinal plants. K.K. Pai, Registrar of the Academy of General Education, Manipal, who presided over the function, said the educated and affluent people were responsible for the destruction of nature.
