CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has expressed grave concern over the high casualties of Olive Ridley turtles on the Orissa coast. Adjudicating over a PIL on the matter, the High Court has asked the State chief conservator of forest to file an affidavit stating what steps have been taken by the State government for protection of turtles that have assumed natural heritage status. The bench of Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice B.N. Mohapatra on Thursday asked the government to file the affidavit by March 28 and fixed the date for next hearing of the case. It may be recalled here that in March 2003, the High Court asked the government to implement the measures recommended by an expert committee for the Olive Ridley protection. The turtles never miss their dates of annual sojourn on the Orissa coast. Come October, these turtles return to the coastal waters.
