Kodai ready for summer festival

Staff Reporter

Facelift for the hill station, particularly Kodaikanal Lake and Bryant Park

120 lights installed around the lake

Three temporary bus stands to be set up

KODAIKANAL: A complete facelift was given to the hill station, particularly Kodaikanal Lake and Bryant Park, major tourists’ attractions, for this summer festival scheduled to commence in the third week of May, according to Collector R. Vasuki.

She was addressing a special consultative meeting held in this connection here recently.

Major development works were over in Bryant Park. Visiting hours to the park have been extended up to 8 p.m. from 6 p.m., thanks to installation of lights and construction of compound wall, she said. “Tourists will be allowed stay till 8 p.m. only in April and May.”

Seventy-eight high-power lights had been installed in the park. An attractive arch was erected at its entrance and a water fountain set up. Walkers’ way was re-laid. An exclusive transformer was installed to maintain uninterrupted power supply.

With installation of 120 lights around the lake at a cost of Rs.60 lakhs, the lake will illuminate at night. The lights were designed in such a way that its radiance would fall on water surface and make the lake glitter, she said. “Now tourists can spend late evening hours near the lake. District administration has plans to install a floating fountain in the lake at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore.”

Besides, basic facilities would be enhanced. Sufficient parking lots were created.

Three temporary bus stands would be set up at prime tourists’ spots.

Twenty electric posts that were in the middle of main roads would be shifted to roadsides.

For the first time, two police out posts - one on Batlatundu-Kodaikanal ghat road and another on Kodaikanal-Palani ghat road – would be set up to help tourists during emergency. Concrete covering on both ends of Batlagundu-Kodaikanal ghat road was almost over. Pending work on six km stretch would be finished soon.

Three medical units would be mobilised to the town. Six mobile toilets would be installed. The municipality purchased three tipper lorries to remove garbage immediately. To entertain tourists, ‘catch the fish’ contest would be held during the festival, Ms. Vasuki said.
