Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday declined to stay a single judge’s order directing the government to permit two students belonging to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church to write Saturday’s SSLC examination after 6 p.m. The Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice K.T. Sankaran asked the two petitioners to appear before the school authorities at 1.30 p.m. and wait in the room of the headmaster till 6 p.m. They could take their examination at 6 p.m. The single judge’s directive came on a writ petition filed by Remya Rajan and Jincy Monachan, students of the S.D.A. High School, Sadanandapuram near Kottarakara. According to them, they belonged to Seventh-Day Adventist and observe Saturday as Sabbath. They could not do any work till 6 p.m. In his order, Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan had observed that right from 1961, the government had been permitting the students belonging to the Seventh-Day Adventist to write examinations after 6 p.m. when they were scheduled on Saturdays.
