CPI has decided to support Statehood issue in view of the “increasing sentiment" NELLORE: With the draft political resolution ahead of the 20th Communist Party of India (CPI) national conference including the issue of separate Statehood to Telangana, political developments over Telangana might gain momentum. The 20th CPI national conference, which will be conducted from March 23 to 27 in Hyderabad, assumes significance as it comes in the wake of Communist Party of India (Marxist) reported criticism that CPI owed an explanation to the people about its decision to change the stand on smaller States that was in sharp contrast to the Marxist- Leninist ideals. But the CPI, which has stressed the need of building a Left and democratic alternative to both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in the very same draft resolution made its stance clear on Telangana. “The demand for carving out a separate state of Telangana has grown among the people of that region. Taking note of this growing demand, the CPI supports the formation of Telangana.” According to a senior CPI leader, there was nothing wrong in two parties having differences on certain issues. And the party has decided to support separate Statehood to Telangana in view of the “increasing sentiment and growing demand. However, the party will make it very clear to the people as to why it has taken such a decision in the national conference.” CPI national secretary A.B. Bardhan, secretariat members Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, D. Raja, Gurudas Dasgupta and P.K. Chandrappan as well as hundreds of communist party leaders from 40 different countries will take part in the 20th national conference to discuss various issues at length. The resolution has other issues such as CPI and other Left party relations with the Congress, the Indo-US nuclear deal and Hindutva agenda by the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. Economic growthIt has also included Indian economy in particular on Sensex, banks’ role and economic growth and development besides the threat to retail trade in the wake of corporate houses entering into the retail market in a big way and the policy of Special Economic Zones (SEZ). Moreover, issues related to agriculture such as agrarian crisis, farmers’ suicides, corporate and contract farming, the issue of credit and food security will also come up for discussion.
