484 motorists booked for offences Steps to suspend driving licence THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has intensified the drive against erring motorists as part of the efforts to curb road accidents in the State and ensure road discipline. Speeding, dangerous driving, overtaking through left side, driving without valid licence, overloading, jumping traffic signals and yellow lines are the offences on which the drive is concentrated. Already, 484 motor vehicles had been booked for various traffic offences in south zone comprising Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts since the crackdown began. As many as 78 were booked for driving different class of motor vehicles without valid driving licence, seven for over-speeding, 43 for dangerous driving and six for overloading. The officials had impounded 20 vehicles that were plying without remitting tax. MVD sources said the department had already initiated steps to suspend the driving licence of nine motorists who were found over-speeding and indulging in overloading. A sum of Rs.2.10 lakh was collected as fine by the officials from the erring motorists. The drive, being carried out under the instructions of Additional State Transport Commissioner Ananthakrishnan, is led by Deputy Transport Commissioner (South Zone) A. Abdul Shukoor. The drive that begins at 6 a.m. lasts till 8 p.m. As many as eight teams had been constituted to carry out the crackdown. As many as 67 cases of vehicles plying without permit/valid registration were also found. According to officials, the delay in posting the Regional Transport Officers (RTO’s) and Joint RTO’s and lack of vehicles for the officials was hampering the drive. The post of RTO is lying vacant in Attingal and Alappuzha that of Joint RTO’s in Parasala, Kottarakara, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.
