Ill-effects of GM crops highlighted

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Agricultural produce that have genetically modified (GM) ingredients in them affect those who consume such food, observed P. Duraisingam, Chairman of Federation of Consumer Organisations of Tamil Nadu (FEDCOT).

He was speaking at a one-day workshop on GM food and consumer’s health organised by Consumer, Research, Education, Action, Training and Empowerment (CREATE) of Thiruvananthapuram, FEDCOT and Youth and Child Services Society (YCSS) of Mettupalayam to mark the International Women’s Day and World Consumer Day at Mettupalayam.

To enlighten consumers, FEDCOT had been carrying out a campaign on GM crops. Organic scientist G. Nammalwar said that cultivable land was gradually dwindling and the role of farmers had been usurped by multinational companies.

He cited the examples of farmers in Salem and Dharmapuri districts who cultivated Bt cotton.

The yield was poor and the lands had become unfit for cultivation for the next five years. About the adverse impact of research, he said that it had led to disappearance of many traditional varieties of seeds. He lamented that the agricultural universities had succumbed to the pressures of MNCs and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University had started conducting experiments on GM brinjal and it does not augur well for the country.

R. Sridhar, Co-ordinator of THANAL, Thiruvananthapuram, said that there was a serious threat to food security.

R. Kaladharan, Training Director of FEDCOT, said that the health of the nation was at stake.R. Ponnambalam, Managing Trustee and K.R. Jeyaraman, Training Director of CREATE, discussed the strategies for creating awareness on GM food.

Balabharathi, Dindigul MLA, was the special guest and K. Mahabunisha, District Women Co-ordinator for FEDCOT, also spoke.
