dated March 15, 1958: Vallathol dead

Vallathol Narayana Menon, eminent poet of Kerala, died at Ernakulam on March 13. He was 79. His passing away removes from the field of Malayalam literature a towering personality who had profoundly influenced his countrymen for about six decades. He rose into prominence in the early years of this century and was hailed as one of the trinity of modern Malayalam literature. The others, Kumaran Asan and Ullur S. Parameswara Aiyar, predeceased him. Poet Vallathol was a rebel against conventions. He made many innovations in Malayalam poetry. The most important of them was the change of metre from slokas to Dravidian metre, which has now become very popular in Malayalam.
