Justice Sharma for Supreme Court
J. Venkatesan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium of judges, headed by Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, has cleared the elevation of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court M.K. Sharma as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Hailing from Assam, Mr. Justice Sharma will represent the north-east. Justice H.K. Sema, who represents north-east is due to retire on June 1.
Though there are two vacancies in the apex court, recommendation was made only for one vacancy.
Since there is no representation for woman after the retirement of Justice Ruma Pal in 2006, the other vacancy is likely to be filled by a woman judge.
According to highly placed sources in the Law Ministry, the other recommendations include the transfer of Madras High Court Chief Justice A.P. Shah as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court soon after the elevation of Mr. Justice Sharma. Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court A.K. Ganguly is being shifted as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Justice B.S. Chauhan, senior judge of the Allahabad High Court, is being elevated as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court and Justice S. Lodha, senior judge of the Rajasthan High Court, is to become the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
