Former CEO of Aspinwall dead

KOCHI: E.B. Unni, former chief executive of Aspinwall & Co. Ltd, died in the city in the early hours of Friday, after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Rajalakshmi Unni, and son, Santhosh Unnikrishnan, COO of Heritage Foods, Hyderabad.

Unni who joined Aspinwall in 1956, held various positions in the company, including heading its Mangalore division, and finally taking over as Chief Executive in 1979.

He remained in this position and as Director of various companies in the Group till his retirement in April 2001. He continued to be associated with the Company as consultant till his demise.

Under the Aspinwall Group, Unni was instrumental in setting up Periyar Chemicals Ltd., a pioneering and successful venture – the first of its kind in the country – for the manufacture of formic acid. He took an active role in bringing about many path breaking developments associated with Coffee, Rubber and Coir industries, including the well-documented sales tax case related to Coffee exports.

A doyen in the trade and industrial circles of Kerala, he held many important positions during his working life, such as president of the Cochin Chamber of Commerce & Industry, president of the West Coast Employers Federation, member, Coir Board, chairman of the APK (Association of the Planters of Kerala ) and vice-president of UPASI.

He was associated with APK and UPASI as executive member for more than two decades.

Unni was well known in the city’s social circles and was member of the Cochin Club, Lotus Club, Cochin Yacht Club and Cochin Golf Club.
