‘City’s population likely to increase by another 70 lakh by 2021’ Says, verdict will deter people from seeking shelter in slums NEW DELHI: Welcoming the Supreme Court judgment on Friday allowing construction of third floors as per the provisions of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken said the decision would pave the way for providing housing to all citizens of the Capital keeping in view its projected population growth in the coming years. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Maken said: “By 2021, the population of Delhi is estimated to be supplemented by over 70 lakh to the existing 1.4 crore. This population not only has to be accommodated but also provided with basic civic amenities. “Thus it is vital that the civic bodies also gear themselves up for setting up the necessary infrastructure in newly inhabited regions.” The Minister said Delhi’s total area was 1.48 lakh hectares of which 78,000 hectares constituted urban inhabited regions, 21,000 hectares were allocated for sanitary landfills and statuary greens while 10,000 hectares were set aside for utilities such as sewage and water treatment plants. “Just about 20,000 hectares remain uninhabited and these regions will be utilised for the new population diffusing into Delhi. “Since this area is not enough considering the magnitude of people coming in, the Court’s verdict will help arrest the burgeoning of unauthorised colonies as well as deter people from seeking shelter in slums,” he said. According to Mr. Maken, the Master Plan provided for accommodating 40 per cent of the additional population in new areas, 40 per cent in existing areas and the remaining 20 per cent in the National Capital Region.
